What is an SDS?

An SDS (Safety Data Sheet), also referred to in Turkish as a Güvenlik Bilgi Formu (GBF), is a standardized technical document that systematically defines the hazard classification of a substance or mixture, exposure scenarios, risk control measures, and regulatory status.

The term "MSDS" is no longer valid. The current format is aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals and is fully harmonized with global requirements. In Türkiye, SDS preparation and compliance are mandatory under the KKDIK Regulation and the SEA Regulation.

SDS's Technical Role

An SDS is not merely an informational document; it serves as the central data backbone of the chemical risk assessment and control system.

Key technical functions include:

Hazard Classification:
Determination of physical, health, and environmental hazards in accordance with the criteria of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.

Label Elements:
Definition of H (Hazard) and P (Precautionary) statements, signal word, and hazard pictograms.

Exposure Assessment:
Application of reference values such as DNEL (Derived No Effect Level) and PNEC (Predicted No Effect Concentration) to evaluate human and environmental exposure thresholds.

Risk Management Measures (RMM):
Implementation of engineering controls, process safety measures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to mitigate identified risks.

Transport Classification:
Classification under ADR, IMDG Code, and International Air Transport Association frameworks, including UN number, hazard class, and packing group determination.

Regulatory Compliance:
Alignment with national and international legislation, including KKDIK Regulation registration status, SEA Regulation classification, and other applicable regulatory references.

SDS (Safety Data Sheet) Structure – Annex II (16 Sections)

SDS documents are prepared under the following 16 headings in accordance with KKDIK Regulation Annex II:

  1. Identification of the substance/mixture and of the company/undertaking
Substance identifiers (Substance ID), use categories (SU/PC/PROC), supplier details

  2. Hazards identification
SEA-compliant classification, H/P statements, labeling elements

  3. Composition / information on ingredients
CAS/EC numbers of hazardous components, concentration ranges, and classifications

  4. First aid measures
Specific response procedures according to routes of exposure

  5. Firefighting measures
Suitable extinguishing media, combustion products, and special equipment requirements

  6. Accidental release measures
Containment, cleaning procedures, and environmental precautions

  7. Handling and storage
Operational control conditions and storage classes

  8. Exposure controls / personal protection
OEL (Occupational Exposure Limits), DNEL/PNEC values, and technical control measures

  9. Physical and chemical properties
Parameters such as pH, viscosity, flash point, vapor pressure, solubility

  10. Stability and reactivity
Thermal stability, conditions to avoid, and reactive substances

  11. Toxicological information
Acute toxicity, skin/eye irritation, CMR (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, Reprotoxic) effects

  12. Ecological information
    Aquatic toxicity, bioaccumulation, and degradability

  13. Disposal considerations
    Waste codes and disposal methods

  14. Transport information
UN number, proper shipping name, class, packing group

  15. Regulatory information
National (KKDIK, SEA) and international regulations

  16. Other information
Revision history, data sources, and additional explanations
